The Renaissance Plan - History

Our Heritage

The Renaissance Plan was originally created in 1994 as The Renaissance Plan for Massachusetts Workers' Compensation. Our original goal was to provide Massachusetts agents and brokers with a viable workers' compensation market to address the needs of so many employers who found themselves forced into the assigned risk pool with no perceivable way out. The Renaissance Plan offered a stable alternative to current markets combined with commitment to its agents and their employers to provide sustained market availability, exemplary services, and education to allow them to regain control over their workers' compensation costs.

As the Massachusetts Plan grew, in 1996, it spread beyond the Commonwealth into the neighboring New England States and became known simply as The Renaissance Plan. Today, The Renaissance Plan is sold throughout New England and is represented by more than 250 local independent insurance agents and brokers in all these states.

Our Insurance Carrier Partners

Since inception, coverage in The Renaissance Plan has been written through Savers Property & Casualty Insurance Company and Star Insurance Company, members of the Meadowbrook Insurance Group of Southfield, MI. Meadowbrook is a New York Stock Exchange company that has developed specific expertise in alternative insurance marketing products and services.

Our Agent-Owned Insurance Company

In 1996, Minuteman Insurance Company, Ltd. was formed in support of The Renaissance Plan. Minuteman is owned and operated by a group of independent Renaissance Insurance brokers, some of their key employees, and several staff of Renaissance Insurance Agency, Inc.. Minuteman is a Bermuda-based insurer that reinsures a portion of all business written by The Renaissance Plan on a quota-share basis. J. Bruce Cochrane is President and the largest single stockholder of Minuteman. He is joined by 21 additional highly professional investor agents who were selected for their years of experience in the insurance industry, their integrity, and their commitment to providing exemplary services and products to their clients.

Our Underwriting Appetite

The Renaissance Plan writes a broad range of business classes. With a few reinsurance-driven exceptions, we maintain a "best-in-class" underwriting philosophy. We principally underwrite employers' management, under the premise that on-site management committed to workplace safety is the key element to a successful workers' compensation program.
