Jump start your hiring in February, Insurance Careers Month
Looking for new hires for your agency this year? Why not get a jump start in February, a good month to show some love for job candidates. We aren't making a pitch for Valentine's Day but for the 4th Annual Insurance Careers month. We like this video from the Insurance Information Institute on working in the insurance industry. You might highlight it in a blog post, on your hiring page or share it on social media.
One great strength in our industry is its stability and opportunity for growth. And right now, there are many opportunities - a study from a few years ago pointed to the need to fill 400,000 positions by 2020 - largely to replace aging and retiring workers. Insurance is an industry with an older demographic. To help you in your career outreach to millennials, we offer a few best practices for honing your pitch and making your agency attractive to this demographic:
- Show them a path for growth. According to Gallup research, "Millennials fundamentally think about jobs as opportunities to learn and grow. Their strong desire for development is, perhaps, the greatest differentiator between them and all other generations in the workplace." Talk about growth opportunities both in your agency and in the insurance industry at large.
- Explain the purpose of your organization; your values - millennials want to connect with an organization's goals and purpose and want their values to be aligned. They are attracted to socially responsible organizations. Applicants may have limited understanding of insurance or may see it simply as a financial and transnational business. Be sure to define your agency's jobs in terms of the help and social good you provide to your customers and your community.
- Introduce applicants to staff members. Millennials place high importance on collaboration and teamwork. Let them meet and talk to other people working in your agency.
- Talk about technology. Millennials are the most wired and connected generation. Highlight your agency's commitment to technology, and the role it plays in the agency.
- Benefits are important. Be prepared to discuss your benefits. Flexibility of hours, telecommuting and work-life issues are important to this generation. These factors may be as important as pay in evaluating offers.
