Fit for a Cause: Mariela’s Miles

Some activities are just win-win right from the start. For example, getting your agency staff engaged in fun wellness activities like group walking is beneficial to your employee's health, which in turn yields benefits to your bottom line; Engaging your employees in local charitable events is a great way to better your community while reinforcing your agency brand and strengthening your local business ties. Both of these are examples of win-win activities. But if you're creative about it, you can combine fitness and charity for a double win-win, essentially knocking the ball out of the park. Both of these are examples of win-win activities. But if you’re creative about it, you can combine fitness and charity for a double win-win, essentially knocking the ball out of the park. Here’s a recent case in point from our own Renaissance Alliance team.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and to celebrate, our staff rose to the challenge: get people moving while raising money for a very worthy cause. The staff initiated and launched an employee health awareness and fundraising program, Mariela’s Miles. For every mile walked in the month of May, Renaissance pledged $1.00  to the Veteran’s Associate Medical Center of West Roxbury, Massachusetts, in loving memory of our employee Mariela’s husband. There probably would have been a few people who would have committed to walking anyway, just for the health benefits — but by adding the charitable component and support for a fellow employee, participation really took off!

How’d we do? We think it was a big success and we’re really proud of our staff! In just one month, our staff walked 956.81 miles, raising a total of nearly $1,000!  You can see a few photos of the prime movers in this post!

Here’s an added benefit to the fundraising. Our walkers are healthier and most participants are sticking to their new walking routines.

Charity driven, employer-sponsored health initiatives are a great-win-win opportunity for your agency. Connect with a local charity and have your staff drum up some fitness challenges that your agency supports with a donation. Or if you’d prefer, you can connect with organized charity events.
